World's Biggest Outrigger Race Held in Kona

It may be the largest outrigger canoe race event in the world,  the Queen Lili in Kona, Hawaii was started in 1972.  It now attracts 2,500 paddlers from all over the world. While the main event are the six-man competition, the four-day event now features races for OC-1, OC-2 and OC-4. The Labor Day Weekend event wraps up today with the Ali'i Challenge - a northward paddle from Kailua-Kona to Honokohau Harbor and back.

Named in honor of the last reigning monarch of Hawaii, Queen Lili'uokalani, the first race fell on the Queen's birthday, September 2.
