18th Annual Washington Canoe Club Kumu’ohu Challenge

The Washington Canoe Club is pleased to invite you to the 18th Kumu’ohu Challenge on the Potomac River. This is the season opening race of the East Coast Outrigger Racing Association (ECORA) sanctioned OC1/OC2 points series and is part of the Mid-Atlantic SUP racing season. In addition to outrigger and SUP, classes will include surfski, sea kayak, and ICF sprint canoe/kayak. Come celebrate the spring thaw with a great day of paddling and camaraderie in the Nation’s Capital!

The race course is on the relatively protected water of the Potomac River, beginning and ending in front of the Washington Canoe Club on the beautiful Georgetown waterfront. The OC1/OC2, surfski, and sea kayak course will be ~15 km, while the SUP and sprint canoe/kayak course will be ~8 km. Note: Both races will be run concurrently.

Each participant must have in his/her possession a PFD (Type I, II, III, or V approved by either the US Coast Guard or the District of Columbia) and each boat must have at least one whistle while on the water. Please plan accordingly. In addition, SUP paddlers are encouraged to wear leashes.

Results will be posted on this website at the conclusion of the race.

Parking: Parking on Saturday between 7 am and 3 pm will be limited to assigned race volunteers only. You will be able to unload your crafts but will have to move your car after your craft has been unloaded. There is pay parking along the Georgetown waterfront, including street parking and parking garages. Parking garage information: http://www.georgetowndc.com/transportation/parking.

Allow extra time for parking and walking to the race venue.

Registration:  Last Day of registration is Wednesday, April 17, 2024There will be no race-day registration.  You must register for the race online.

Raffle and Silent Auction: We have some pretty amazing items this year, so bring some cash to participate.

Merch for sale: We will have performance shirts made by Headsweats available for purchase! The presale price is $30 per shirt; $35 at the race. We will also have hats and visors available for purchase. Cash, credit, or checks accepted.

Classes with less than 3 entries may be combined by age and/or gender for awards purposes.

Ohio River Paddlefest Races

Bring your SUP, kayak, canoe, tandem, or prone and join Adventure Crew, The Explore Kentucky Initiative, Stand Up Paddle Cincinnati, at the Ohio River Paddlefest. Racers will be a part of the nation's largest paddling celebration, leading over 2,000 recreational paddlers down a closed course on the Ohio River, passing through downtown Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Race entry includes all Ohio River Paddlefest perks, like free shuttles, and invitation to the Outdoors for All Expo on Friday, August 4. Paddlefest races are part of The Waterman Series and the Midwest Paddle League. All proceeds from Paddlefest, including the races, support Adventure Crew and their work with 27 schools and hundreds city teens, exposing them to regular outdoor recreation at no-cost to students. Paddlefest races will follow the classifications outlined below for paddlecraft with youth, mens, and womens divisions.
