Colorado River Ramble

Can you describe the different races and courses?

1K Kids race; 1K Sprint Race; 1.5 mile Family Fun Race; 5K and 10K – all distances include SUP, Canoe and kayak.

Everyone is encouraged to participate – beginner and competitive paddlers, children and families welcome! Kids racers age 4-11 must paddle tandem with an adult or, they can register for our Kids 1K SUP, canoe, and/or kayak race at 12:00! Racers 12 years or older may sign up to race solo in the 1.5 mile, 5k, and 10k race. There is a Junior class category for ages 12 to 17.

Kids 1K Races will start and end in the lagoon – doing one full lap around the lagoon! The finish line will be in front of the grandstands. There is plenty of spectator space to cheer the kids on!

1.5 mile course will start in the lagoon and continue under the red bridge onto Lady Bird Lake. Paddlers will cross the lake and make a left turn around the buoy on the other side of the lake. Paddlers will then circumnavigate Bird Island and return to the lagoon and do one full lap around buoys. The finish line will be in front of the grandstands in lagoon!

5K course will start in the lagoon and continue under the red bridge onto Lady Bird Lake. Paddlers will take a sharp right, heading west towards the I-35 bridge pylon. Paddlers will round the last pylon (most west pylon) of the bridge and, return heading east. Paddlers will then circumnavigate Bird Island rounding the marked buoys and return to the lagoon and do one full lap around buoys. The finish line will be in front of the grandstands.

10K course will start in the lagoon and continue under the red bridge onto Lady Bird Lake. Paddlers will take a sharp right, heading west towards the I-35 bridge pylon. Paddlers will round the last pylon (most west pylon) of the bridge and, return heading east. Paddlers will then circumnavigate Bird Island rounding the marked buoys and return to the lagoon and do one full lap around the buoys. The finish line will be in front of the grandstands.

Where can people get paddle gear like PFDs and Hydration packs?

The Expedition School has plenty of PFDs to rent for $5 and, Whole Earth Provision Co. is the place to buy great gear!

Are there paddleboard rentals available and if yes, where? Contact info?

Yes, you can rent SUPs, canoes and/or kayaks from The Expedition School. Email: kimery@expeditionschool.org and put SUP Rental Ramble in the subject heading.

Where can people buy groceries?

On Saturday’s, Farmers Markets abound in Austin. Otherwise, we ask that you support HEB or Central Market!

Where can people stay? Do you have a hotel you can recommend and contact info?

Camping is available at McKinney Falls State Park – approximately 20 minutes away from The Expedition School – or, you can stay @ the Heywood Hotel, Four Seasons, or Hotel San Jose

What great local restaurants can you recommend?

Mr. Natural, Food Truck Veracruz, Juan in a Million or El Chilito.

Where is the best coffee in town?

Houndstooth or Cafe Medici
