In 2024, a remarkable event took place along the non-tidal stretches of the Thames in England, where Adrian not only challenged himself but also set a new Guinness World Record. He achieved the fastest time to paddle 124 miles, wrapping up the journey in 1 day, 11 hours, and 52 minutes. This feat included a staggering 27 hours and 32 minutes of continuous paddling through 44 locks, demonstrating incredible stamina and resilience.
The challenge didn’t end at the finish line at Teddington Lock. To celebrate and maximize the impact of his journey, Adrian and his brother Tim embarked on another paddle down the river right after the record-setting performance. This time, it was to raise funds for Diabetes UK, turning a personal achievement into a charitable endeavor that highlights the spirit of the paddling community.
Adrian’s support team played a crucial role throughout the endeavor. Special thanks go to Chris Lowe, Moira Barson, Vanessa Richards, Steve Angell, Angell Ozlem, and particularly Tim Angell, for their indispensable support during the record attempt. Additional acknowledgments are due to Evan Young from Appalachian Boarding Company for supplying the board and Bray Lake Watersports for the QuickBlade Paddles, not forgetting the years of coaching from Larry Cain and Paddle Monster, which were instrumental in Adrian’s preparation and success.
Though the record was later surpassed during the Thames Ultra race, the joy of setting it, combined with the nostalgic childhood memories of watching Roy Castle and the McWirter brothers on TV, made the experience unforgettable for Adrian. It’s a poignant reminder of the adventure and camaraderie that paddle sports can bring, bridging personal goals with community benefits.
This story isn’t just about setting records; it’s about the heartwarming endeavors that bring people together for a greater good, echoing through the waters of the Thames and beyond. Join us in applauding Adrian for his incredible achievements on and off the water.
